A Canadian Advantage: Public and Private Catholic School Options for International Learners

When choosing to send students to Canada to study for junior high or high school, it is important for families not to overlook the uniquely Canadian Catholic school option. Canada is the only country that has a Catholic School Board in many provinces, creating a strong academic and character-driven structure for student learning in both public and independent/private school environments. Catholic schools are often centres for excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities, personal growth, and community connection.

Catholic School for Non-Catholics

Catholic schools are inclusive and open to all students, not just those who belong to the Catholic faith. Because these schools are often publicly funded, and follow provincial curriculums, they are “open access” to all learners. While Catholic teachings and traditions are part of daily school life, families choose Catholic education because of strong academics, a sense of community, and shared values: respect, compassion, integrity, and social responsibility. Students are not indoctrinated into the Catholic faith; nor do they need to participate fully in the rituals of the faith, though they are expected to participate in school-wide events in a respectful manner. Service learning is an integral part of the educational structure. Students from a variety of faith, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, as well as those with no religious affiliation, are welcome in Catholic schools. The strong school community evolves from the focus on values that resonate with everyone. Nurturing, empathy, compassion, patience, and understanding in every aspect of school life is dedicated to the formation of the whole person. Strong moral character, service, leadership, and making a meaningful difference in the world are all essential components of a Catholic school education.

Academic Strength

Academically, Catholic school programs in Canada are the same, or more rigorous, than public-school options. Canadian education standards demand that students in Catholic schools meet the same outcomes and follow the same curriculum as students in secular schools. Catholic schools take immense pride in their consistent, high academic standards, with a high percentage of students accepted into top Canadian or international universities, and many earning scholarships. A tradition of academic excellence coupled with values-based education, creates a rigorous and respected learning environment.

Small School, Big Benefits

Catholic schools are often smaller, with fewer students, allowing for a personalized, whole child approach to education, and small class sizes. A family-like atmosphere exists where students feel welcomed, supported, and valued. Teachers know everyone by name and students are assisted as individuals and encouraged to thrive. The balance between academics and values, where students are encouraged in every aspect of their experience, promotes making connections and feeling genuinely a part of the school community. A strong emphasis on values and character development, with a student-centred approach to learning, dedicated teachers, and a focus on holistic character formation are key components of a Catholic school program. Students feel known, supported, and valued; everyone is invested in student success and well-being in a robust learning environment.

Uniforms, or no Uniforms?

Many Catholic schools, public or independent, do not require students to wear a school uniform. Students may wear what they choose, but may need to follow a school dress code.  Some schools, however, do require school uniforms believing they instill a sense of belonging and decorum, reducing social pressure, and allowing students to focus on their learning. Schools may have a regular uniform for daily use, and a more formal version for special occasions. International students choosing a school with uniforms will be assisted in ordering everything they need so their kit is ready for them upon arrival. Even in schools with a uniform requirement there are special days throughout the year where regular dress is permitted as part of the program.

Opportunities for International Students

A first-class education, close-knit school communities, with smaller numbers of international students, allows for more natural opportunities to build meaningful connections with local Canadian students. International students are truly integrated into school life and have a more personalized experience. A supportive structure and caring atmosphere encourages second language students to study and build English proficiency in a safe and nurturing environment. Many opportunities exist for joining athletic teams, clubs, specialized classes, and extra-curricular activities.

“I would probably say that my favourite memory… is, not just all the trips and excursions
I went on, but also the community itself. Everyone was really nice and welcoming.
Often I was included by people that I hadn’t even talked to before, which is great,
if you’re new in a foreign country. And that is the exact reason I would recommend
it to others. The size of the school, just makes it so that you interact with so many
people, and bond over different kind of ways with each of them.”

Cost

Because many Catholic schools in Canada are publicly funded, tuition fees for international students are the same, or cheaper, than they would be in the secular school system. Some Catholic independent schools do charge a higher tuition but would be less costly than a secular independent/private school. Some view this as a private education at a discounted rate.

Final Thoughts

Catholic schools are often centres for excellence, outperforming public schools. With excellent extra-curricular programming, balance of academic rigor, personal growth, internationally recognized education, and community connection, they provide a unique study abroad option for international learners. Students learn in an environment where they are welcomed, valued, and supported, and where shared values create a strong sense of belonging. Catholic school options are not just an educational choice for families, but a place where students thrive.
